I remember heading to South Dakota when I was a young girl. We visited Mt Rushmore, Bear Country USA and Reptile Gardens, these were all of the fun places a 7 year old would want to go. However, growing up in Colorado, i remember the mountains of South Dakota not making too much of an impression on me.
Our main reason for visiting South Dakota was to change our residency and pick up our driver’s license, so we knew we would not be here long. We decided to head up Spearfish Canyon for an evening drive. The light on the canyon walls gave off a beautiful evening glow and the colors were just beautiful.
We saw a sign for Roughlock Falls and decided to take the trail with the dogs. We walked through thick birch trees and up the valley floor and once we arrived at the falls, we were pleasantly suprised. They were gorgeous!
Once we left the falls we continued up the canyon road and found a spot where the movie Dances with Wolves was filmed. This is one of my favorite movies and it was rather interesting to see the last scene of the movie where they leave the tribe in the wintertime.
I love finding unexpected suprises and I know that there will be many more to come on this journey.
There will be a great deal to post coming up as we are headed to my favorite place in the Flattop Wilderness.
